Conference Tournament for CIAA Announced

CIAACharlotte, NC – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) releases the 2016 Baseball Championship Bracket.  The first round of the double-elimination tournament will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 28th at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina.  The three-day event is open to the public with a $5.00 (cash only) per day admission.

Regular Season Champion Winston-Salem State University enters the 2016 CIAA Baseball Championship at the No. 1 seed for the fifth consecutive season as they look to continue a championship sweep which began in 2012.  Winston-Salem State concluded the regular season with a 13-3 conference record while finishing 27-19 overall.  The Rams’ only losses were recorded versus No. 2 Chowan University and No. 4 Virginia State University (7-9 Conference; 8-29 Overall), who the defending CIAA Champions will take on at 12:30 p.m. on opening day.

Chowan was barely slighted out of the top ranking by the Rams as the team finished the season 12-4 in the conference and 22-22 in overall play.  The Hawks will face No. 3 Saint Augustine’s University, who sit 7-9 in conference matchups and 12-31 overall, in the first game of the tournament.  In regular season head-to-head competition, the Hawks lead the Falcons 3-1.

The Consolation Round will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday with the loser of the CU/SAU game versus the losing team of the WSSU/VSU contest.  The winners of the opening games will advance to play at 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Friday.

The 2016 CIAA Baseball Championship Bracket will feature six total games, including the Championship Game at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, 2016.  If a tiebreaker situation exists, the ultimate elimination game will begin 30 minutes following the tie.

The USA Baseball National Training Complex is located at 200 Brooks Park Lane in Cary, NC.  Concessions will be available for the duration of the tournament.
