In some ways, these articles could write themselves.
“Top 30 ranked team swept by unranked squad.”
“Team with high hopes this season, stumbled early on but regained their footing and are making HUGE runs towards the NCAA tournament.”
This last week saw all of that and more.
Almost every region, as well as just about the entire Top 30 landscape has changed. Sure bets are now licking wounds and trying to get back in the saddle. Others who are surging are just hoping next week they won’t be the latest in the “what happened” saga.
So, let’s get to it! First off, we have a new number one team in the country…Mercyhurst. The top ten in our rankings have been playing musical chairs all season, and here we go again.
Entering our Top 30 rankings are some very hot teams. West Chester had some weather-related issues to getting started, so has just now gotten in 15 games but is about where we thought they’d be. Tusculum, after possibly the most brutal February schedule in D2 baseball, with almost all of their opponents in the top 20…has finally found a way to be on the other side of close games and has reeled off 10 straight wins to take control of first place in the South Atlantic Conference. And an early favorite, West Florida, also has regained its preseason expectations and is taking charge of their season.
On the regional front, a few new teams to the rankings this week are making noise are returning to the rankings after dropping out. Felician has been on a tear, and if they can keep this up…they will go deep in the East Region tournament. Slippery Rock has shown that it wants to maneuver itself to the Atlantic Region tournament, and if it can be consistent, it just may be making a case to be there. Texas A&M – Kingsville jumps back in after a brief exit last week.
Some teams now have gotten themselves into situations in their conferences where the next week may decide the rest of their season. Early favorites may be all but done in a chance to win the regular season titles after this coming weekend. And teams on top, have huge series coming up that will decide it all.
As we continue to say over and over again…best year in a long time for D2 baseball as a whole. Maybe the best year ever.
