Turbulence Throughout The Country As The Season Fires Up

We thought Week 1 was brutal. But Week 2 showed that this year, things aren’t going to wait for April to heat up. D2 Baseball is on fire right out of the blocks. And three regions haven’t really even gotten going yet!

As the National Champion NOVA Southeastern stumbled and North Georgia showed they belonged, other teams like USC Aiken showed their continued dominance. And Barton ends up the first team in the country to 10-0.

We watched several series where ranked teams went at it like they were already in Grand Prairie for the College World Series. One of the best series we watched was the Colorado Mesa v. Dixie State four game series. The Mavericks took the series 3 games to one. But folks when you come down in Game 4, leading by one after 5 lead changes in the game, and then the Mavericks walk the first two, intentionally walk the next hitter after a wild pitch, you know this series was going to come down to the very last pitch. Colorado Mesa was able to bring in a closer, who struck out the next two and got a popup to win the game.

And this level of play is going on in February!

As you look at the rankings, you may notice some teams with undefeated records, or with one loss, are not on there…while some other teams with a couple of losses remain. It is early in the season, and some teams with multiple losses have had extremely hard schedules, playing almost their entire schedule against ranked teams. Other teams with undefeated records, have done so with schedules that weren’t as strong. We expect all of this to sort itself out over the next 2-3 weeks.

We said in our preseason analysis that this may be the best season at the D2 level in years. So far, what we have seen is that it is better than we thought.

Below is the link to the current National & Regional rankings for this week.
